Contaminated Sites
Our contaminated sites department is divided into the following divisions: Investigations of contaminated sites, remediation of contaminations, brownfield redevelopment and environmental analysis

- Excavation of former gas works
The staff members of Gibs geologen + ingenieure not only have the professional expertise, but are also licensed appraisers in terms of §18 BBodSchG (German Federal Soil Protection Act) for the following fields of appraisal (Sachgebiet, SG): SG 1 (non-point and site-specific surveys / historic research), SG 2 (assessment of potential hazard for the pathway soil – groundwater) and SG 5 (remediation). Our engineering office thus meets the prerequisites for the authorities’ acceptance of our expert appraisals and design work for the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites.
The investigations of contaminated sites include:
- Historic research, including the survey of official documents, the evaluation of historic maps and files, interviewing of contemporary witnesses
- Exploratory investigations, including site inspections, sampling and analyses, the presentation and evaluation of the results
- Detailed investigations including the compilation of a survey program, determination of the local hydrogeological and geological conditions, delimitation of the contamination, determination of the contaminants, assessment of the potential hazard
During remediation of contaminated sites we manage:
- Remediation investigations and planning in keeping with the applicable rules and regulations
- Selection of the remediation procedures and methods
- Self-control measures
- Safeguarding measures
Fully or partially developed wasteland can be made reusable by brownfield redevelopment. Our experts:
- Perform base data research
- Determine and evaluate the potential pollution hazard
- Prepare health and safety plans
- Remediate contaminations
- Determine the cost-effectiveness of a project and optimize the procedure
- Assess the costs, including cost / benefit analyses

- Groundwater sampling
Our environmental analysis services include:
- The selection and determination of suitable and legally specified sampling and assay methods
- The coordination of the sampling plan with the authorities
- The preparatory work for and collection of quality controlled samples
- The control and evaluation of the analytical results
